Through our social media practice, my team have been involved in developing online social networks for a range of international media, companies, and networks; but often the best learning emerge from applying our ideas and tools to the needs of small, sometimes tiny, intimate online social networks. This talk will provide brief case studies, warts and all, from three projects: Green thing—the cheeky, pioneering Green behavior change social network The Frontline Club—a London club for international frontline journalists, for whom we are launching an innovative mashup of public services to create an online support service Mentornet—a learning community for Australian women entrepreneurs This will include technology choices, using public services and APIs, engagement tips, and design patterns for intimate networks.

Very engaging and at times inspirational. Thanks Lee

For me, the best presentation I attended so far. Really inspiring!

Nice examples, but nothing more IMHO. I hoped to find some do's and don'ts, some concrete insights on how it can be done the right way. There were some, but they were rather obvious while I think there is a lot more knowledge shareable, especially by Lee who is an expert in this field. Maybe in a next speech, since Lee can speech very well :)

You're right Bart. Time really only allowed for a brief dive into each, but as you say, maybe next time I can cover a single example in depth. The main message of the session was just to ask the smart people here to focus on niche social networks around interesting communities of people rather than chase pretend money in the mass market networks that still dominate the field. Thanks for the feedback!

Fantastic presentation, that really opened my eyes as to the potential and real value of social networking sites. Would have been nice to hear more about features and design decisions that varied among the case studies, but the time allotted was well filled with valuable stuff. This session has changed how I see some of the work I do.

The best presentation of the conference. Lee is a fantastic speaker, an expert on the topic and a rich, entertaining presentation with loads of examples. Thanks Lee!
