Web 2.0 vs. the Water Cooler: How Web 2.0 Has Changed the Way We Communicate at Work

11:00 - 11:50AM on Thursday, October 23 in C1
In this presentation, BT Managing Director JP Rangaswami will discuss how traditional telecom capabilities should no longer be considered stand-alone applications but as features in enterprise and Web 2.0 applications. The incorporation of telecom capabilities into these applications will change the way we communicate in the workplace today. In today’s Web 2.0 era, the ways in which we communicate in the workplace have already changed significantly. In many cases, conference calling has already replaced in-person meetings and instant messaging and SMS have replaced voice calls. Social networking, wikis, and micro-blogging are entering the enterprise and creating new opportunities for people to communicate with each other. For this reason, BT has exposed its next generation all-IP network to developers via its Software Development Kit (SDK). This enables developers to integrate capabilities such as messaging, conference calls, voice calls, authentication, and inbound SMS into their applications with as little as one line of code. The SDK allows developers and businesses to create applications that include traditional telecom functionality more simply, faster, and cheaper than ever before.

The world of communication is certainly changing but digital storage and simple metadata is the key. Well presented, comprehensive and really interesting. We now know how to get rid of email and get rid of paper from our daily workflow.

Mr. JP put into perspective very well - I enjoyed the talk.

However, I was expecting a little more specific insight into the contemporary trends and, in particular, how BT's recent developments are affecting their internal and external strategies (esp. the acquisition of Ribbit) regarding communications.

Also - how does the "vernacularization" of enterprise communication affect the management practices that help hold together both traditionally oriented and new groups and individuals? Do people feel that they are losing some ability to control?

OK ... he said "no product pitches", but in this case, I was hoping for some :).

I liked the thoughts on data ownership!

Thanks for the talk!
