Beyond Who Else Bought What

3:40 - 4:30PM on Thursday, October 23 in C1
We are moving into the stage of the Web where computers will be able to at least partially comprehend messages and topics. Recommendations technology will go beyond advertising into all aspects of web experience. Media and publishing platforms will be expected to provide new kinds of tools for their users. Usually this will mean more magic experience when creating content, connecting with friends, or just messaging. These kinds of tools are considerably more demanding to make than usual Web 2.0 features. Therefore, we will probably get used to getting them via web services. Currently the best example of “intelligence via web service” is Akismet, the spam filtering service making life easier for a great many web publishers. But even more advanced helpers are knocking on the site owner’s door. Can you afford not to open them? This talk will focus on what are the potentials for both user-generated content and classical media sites to extend and improve their sites via these kind of services, with emphasis on content creation. What can and what should be offered to users, readers, and authors today? What can we hope to offer in the future, someday? How much time does integration of different features take, and what are the benefits and risks? What do you think the future will look like? Full interactive experience where you communicate to the computer every single detail of the task? Or will we deal with a computer like we do with an assistant. Assign him work then review and fix the results. My bet is on the second.

language, of course, a topic def. dear to the europeans heart as this is still one of the most separating issues.

and I'd like to see some of your ideas where technology already could be going as we are still doing way too much manually. ;)

Thanks, will definitely say something about issues and possible solutions for coping with beautiful European language diversity :)

Oh, and we'll talk about what we can automate now already. Some things with pretty simple tricks actually!

Presentation fast and high energy - left me behind sometimes (could have perhaps done a bit more laying foundations - setting the scene). However, the examples made a great difference and overall it was a fascinating presentation.
