Gender Issues in Web 2.0 Careers: A Discussion

2:35 - 3:25PM on Thursday, October 23 in B8-9

Are you frustrated that there aren’t enough women in tech, that women are not well represented at conferences, or that the culture appears to favor male accomplishment? The issue of gender is not a simple one: there are complex societal and psychological pressures that influence how we all behave, men and women, and we’re not always clear on what drives us to do what we do. This participatory session will attempt to tease out some of the threads around gender and produce ideas for how we can collectively act to level the playing field

Suw wrote a blog post to start raising some issues about 2 weeks ago: http://strange.corante.com/2008/09/28/women-in-technology-what-are-the-real-issues

I wouldnt say, that I am frustrated, maybe men are more frustrated, that there are so many women as there actually are. Even though "we" are for the most part looked upon as gatecrashers into the testosterone haven of male geeks - sorry I slipped there ;-)

Looking forward to your session Suw.

Karin - you're hilarious. There are actually tons of women in our technology... and more joining. It does seem as if there are more of us who work particularly with business development, marketing, PR... community, evangelism.

So how about we flip it and say - hey! Where are all the men in these areas of technology?!

I'm very much looking forward to this session as well. :)

I'm kinda interested in this session. I don't know any women developers. And Karin seems to feel like men in general have put a gate up.

I guess I'm somewhat curious if there are things that men do or say to discourage women from software development [ actual coding ] that I'm just plain oblivious to. And I would like to know if I do or say any of these things so that I stop!

I think Janetti is right that there are lots of women in technology... I don't know the numbers but I've worked in an IT shop where I was the only guy. I was also the only developer though.

And anytime I've tried to geek out on code with a woman it's crazy how disinterested they become... they can't even feign interest to be polite.

...come to think of it, that's anyone who's not a developer that becomes disinterested... not just women.

Now Joel you are the funny one - lets meet and you can geek out on code as much as you want, I will be polite :-)
